Women in Engineering (WIE)
IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is a global network of IEEE members and volunteers dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests in a career in engineering and science. Their mission is to connect, support, and inspire women and girls worldwide, and facilitate their recruitment and retention in STEM fields, fostering technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
Learn more about all activities and opportunities ongoing for women in STEM as well as WIE sponsors for leadership training and networking via its annual International Leadership Conference, Regional Leadership Summits, Regional and IEEE Society sponsored events, and various webinars on the IEEE WIE website.
IEEE NPSS has taken the WIE pledge
“IEEE WIE pledges to work towards gender-diversified panels at all IEEE meetings, conferences, and events, including our own.”
For more information about the WIE pledge and best practices: https://wie.ieee.org/about/wie-pledge/
In support of the above IEEE WIE Pledge, ICOPS conferences diligently incorporate an integral WIE component into all of our conference planning and execution. All conference attendees are encouraged to attend the WIE events.
NPSS WIE Travel Grants
The NPSS sponsors Leadership Development Travel Grants to provide leading-edge professional development for women who are in mid-level to senior phases of their careers. Information on the Grants can be found on the NPSS Awards page.
NPSS Sponsored WIE Events
The NPSS sponsors events at our NPSS conferences to enhance networking in our technical communities, to provide opportunities for career mentoring, and to promote work/life balance. Previous NPSS WIE events include panels, keynotes and theatre productions!

2023
Amber Anderson
Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM
Bio Amber Anderson grew up in Indiana and graduated from Indiana State University (where she was part of the 1%). She completed a master’s degree in electro-optics engineering from the University of Dayton (where she was part of the 1%) and finally ended up at Kirtland AFB working space focal plane array programs (where she was part of the 1%).
Amber spent 11 years working pervasive space technology programs with a brief stint in Madrid, Spain (where she most definitely part of the 1%). After moving around in the government to directed energy systems, she landed a position as a program manager for a cUAS program (where it all began to click). She ran the THOR program for 4 years before melting away into an outreach effort whose goal was to identify ways in which directed energy could be used in more commercial applications. She recently moved from that external facing role to a deputy program manager position for a joint-service base defense program.
